Libyan desert patrols operating under the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency have thwarted an attempted fuel smuggling operation in the remote desert region between the Sarir oil field and the city of Tazerbo, authorities announced.
According to an official statement issued by the agency, a patrol unit conducting a security sweep in the southeastern desert intercepted a Toyota Tundra vehicle carrying four individuals, including two Libyan nationals and two Sudanese nationals, who were found transporting quantities of fuel believed to be prepared for smuggling outside the country.
Authorities said the patrol encountered the vehicle during routine monitoring operations across desert routes often used by traffickers and smugglers attempting to move fuel and other goods across Libya’s vast borders.
Fuel Intended for Smuggling
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fuel seized during the operation had been prepared for illegal export outside Libya, a practice that continues to pose a significant economic challenge due to the country’s subsidized fuel prices.
Security officials added that the vehicle used in the operation sustained structural damage after falling into a desert ravine, apparently while moving through rough terrain in the remote area between Sarir and Tazerbo.
Despite the damage, the patrol was able to secure the suspects and confiscate the fuel.
Legal Procedures Underway
The four individuals were transferred to the headquarters of the Southeastern Desert Patrols, where authorities began the necessary legal procedures ahead of their referral to the relevant judicial bodies in accordance with Libyan law.
Fuel smuggling has long been a persistent issue in Libya, particularly in border and desert regions where smugglers exploit remote routes to move subsidized fuel toward neighboring countries. Security agencies have intensified patrols in southern and eastern desert areas in recent years in an effort to curb illegal trafficking networks and protect state resources.
Officials say continued monitoring and desert patrol operations remain essential to safeguarding Libya’s economic resources and maintaining security across remote border regions.
