Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) has announced a major offshore gas discovery estimated at around one trillion cubic feet, marking a strategic breakthrough for the country’s energy sector and reinforcing Libya’s position as a potential key gas supplier to global markets.

NOC Chairman Masoud Suleiman revealed the discovery in an official statement, confirming that the find was made in cooperation with Italy’s energy giant Eni, a long-standing strategic partner in Libya’s oil and gas industry. The discovery highlights the untapped potential of Libya’s offshore reserves and signals renewed momentum in exploration and development activities.

Suleiman emphasized that the discovery is not merely a statistical addition to Libya’s hydrocarbon reserves but represents a clear indication that the country still holds significant energy opportunities. He noted that sustained investment in exploration is beginning to deliver tangible results, strengthening confidence in Libya’s long-term energy outlook.

The newly discovered gas reserves are expected to play a critical role in supporting Libya’s plans to increase production capacity, while also helping meet rising domestic demand for natural gas. In addition, the development could enhance Libya’s ability to position itself as a reliable energy exporter, particularly at a time of growing global demand for alternative gas supplies.

According to the NOC, efforts are already underway to fast-track the development of the new field. Plans include linking the discovery to existing infrastructure to accelerate its transition into production, minimizing delays and maximizing economic returns.

Libya’s energy sector, which remains the backbone of its economy, has been gradually recovering amid ongoing political and security challenges. This latest discovery is expected to further boost investor confidence and encourage additional international partnerships in upstream projects.

Suleiman reaffirmed the NOC’s commitment to advancing the country’s energy sector, stressing that Libya’s future in oil and gas remains promising as exploration efforts continue to unlock new reserves.

The discovery comes at a crucial time as Libya seeks to stabilize production levels, diversify energy output, and strengthen its role in global energy markets.
