The Director General of the Libya Development and Reconstruction Fund, Belgassem Haftar, has announced the launch of a major housing project in eastern Libya, aimed at addressing growing demand for residential units.
The project includes the construction of 5,000 new housing units in the city of Tobruk, as part of broader efforts to support urban development and improve living conditions.
The announcement was made during a meeting that brought together local officials, including the mayor of Tobruk, as well as community leaders, elders and youth representatives. The discussions focused on development priorities and the need to expand housing capacity in the city.
Officials said the initiative is part of ongoing programmes led by the fund to strengthen infrastructure and respond to housing shortages in key urban areas. The project is expected to contribute to improving public services and enhancing social stability in Tobruk.
During the meeting, Belgassem Haftar stressed that reconstruction efforts cannot be separated from national unity. He said that rebuilding Libya requires cooperation across all regions and political divides.
He emphasised that Libya remains one unified country, extending from Musaid in the east to Ras Jedir Border Crossing in the west, and that national interests must take precedence over political disagreements.
Haftar added that there can be no sustainable future for Libya without genuine unity, calling on all stakeholders to assume responsibility in supporting reconstruction and development efforts.
The housing project is seen as part of wider attempts to accelerate rebuilding initiatives across Libya, particularly in cities that require expanded infrastructure and services after years of instability.
Authorities hope the development will help meet the needs of local residents while also contributing to long-term economic recovery and stability in the region.
