Heavy rainfall has caused flooding across several streets in the city of Al-Zawiya, disrupting traffic and leaving a number of vehicles stranded, according to local authorities.

The municipality of Al-Zawiya shared footage on Monday showing large sections of roads submerged after intense rainfall, particularly along the extension of Okba Bin Nafi Street, one of the city’s main routes. The accumulation of water significantly affected traffic movement, forcing some drivers to stop while others struggled to pass through flooded areas.

Municipal officials said emergency teams were immediately activated to respond to the situation and monitor developments across affected neighborhoods. Local emergency rooms remain on alert and are coordinating with municipal services to remove stranded vehicles, assist motorists, and reduce the impact of flooding on daily activities.

Authorities emphasized that the priority is ensuring the safety of residents while working to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible. Municipal crews are also assessing drainage conditions and monitoring areas prone to water accumulation.

The heavy rainfall comes as a deep low-pressure weather system affects large parts of northern Libya. According to the National Center of Meteorology, the weather system has brought strong winds, falling temperatures, and heavy rainfall across several coastal regions.

Meteorologists warned that the storm is expected to continue affecting coastal areas stretching from Tripoli and its surrounding suburbs eastward toward Misrata. The system may also produce thunderstorms and occasional hail in some locations.

Weather experts noted that such conditions often lead to the accumulation of rainwater in low-lying areas and the flow of seasonal valleys, increasing the risk of localized flooding in cities with limited drainage capacity.

Al-Zawiya Municipality urged residents to exercise caution while traveling during the storm, especially at night when visibility may be reduced and road conditions more dangerous. Citizens were advised to follow instructions issued by emergency teams and avoid flooded areas whenever possible.
