Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives and President of the Afro-Asian Parliamentary Council, Ageela Saleh, signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) to strengthen regional parliamentary cooperation and institutional partnerships.
The agreement was signed during an official ceremony in Benghazi attended by PAM President Giulio Centemero and his accompanying delegation following bilateral talks focused on expanding parliamentary dialogue and launching a strategic partnership between the Afro-Asian Parliamentary Council and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.
According to a statement issued by the House of Representatives, the memorandum aims to strengthen institutional cooperation, expand parliamentary collaboration, exchange expertise, support legislative capacity-building, and promote dialogue between regional parliamentary organisations in pursuit of shared interests.
The discussions also focused on enhancing parliamentary support programmes, developing institutional cooperation, and encouraging the exchange of legislative experience between the two organisations.
Following the signing ceremony, the two sides exchanged commemorative shields and certificates of appreciation. Centemero also signed the official visitors’ register of the Libyan House of Representatives to mark his official visit.
Earlier on Wednesday, Ageela Saleh welcomed Centemero and the official PAM delegation to Benghazi, where both sides discussed strengthening parliamentary dialogue and institutional partnerships.
The visiting delegation included PAM Vice-President Bilal Qassem, Secretary-General Sergio Piazzi, and Chief Media Officer Marwa Ali Maher.
The Libyan side was represented by Second Deputy Speaker Misbah Douma, who also serves as a member of the Presidential Board of the Afro-Asian Parliamentary Council, alongside MPs Abulkhair Al-Shaab and Sabah Jomaa, as well as Afro-Asian Parliamentary Council Secretary-General Faiz Al-Shawabkeh.
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean is a consultative parliamentary organisation bringing together 280 parliamentarians representing 43 countries from the European Union and the southern and eastern Mediterranean. The organisation promotes democracy, political dialogue, regional security cooperation, economic integration, and climate action.
In June, delegates attending the second General Conference of the Afro-Asian Parliamentary Council in Benghazi elected Aguila Saleh as President of the council, further strengthening Libya’s role in regional parliamentary diplomacy.
