The National Oil Corporation of Libya has announced full containment of a fire that broke out along a crude oil pipeline linked to the Sharara Oil Field, marking the end of a major emergency response operation in the country’s energy sector.
The blaze occurred at kilometre 538 near the Al-Marhan area, south of Zintan, after a leak from a valve on the export pipeline. The National Oil Corporation confirmed on Thursday that the fire has now been fully extinguished following several days of intensive work.
In an official statement, the corporation’s chairman praised what he described as a “national effort”, highlighting the role of specialised firefighting and safety teams within the oil sector, alongside the National Safety Authority and the Petroleum Facilities Guard.
Local authorities and private sector actors in Zintan also contributed to the response, providing logistical and field support that helped contain the incident and secure the surrounding area.
Officials said the operation took place during the holy month of Ramadan, adding that the coordinated response reflected strong national unity and commitment to protecting Libya’s critical infrastructure.
No casualties were reported during the incident. The swift containment is expected to limit operational disruptions, with earlier measures having already ensured the continuation of production through alternative routes.
The National Oil Corporation extended its appreciation to all technical staff and volunteers involved, noting that their collective efforts demonstrated the sector’s ability to respond effectively to emergencies.
Investigations into the cause of the initial leak remain ongoing, as authorities seek to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The successful containment of the fire is seen as a positive development for Libya’s oil industry, which continues to face infrastructure challenges but remains a cornerstone of the national economy.
