The UNHCR has reported a sharp rise in the number of Sudanese refugees arriving in Libya, warning of mounting humanitarian and protection challenges as the influx continues.

According to the agency, more than 554,937 Sudanese refugees have entered Libya since April 2023, following the outbreak of conflict in Sudan. Of these, approximately 73,754 individuals were officially registered after the escalation of violence.

The report highlighted that around 90,711 refugees have been registered at UNHCR’s main registration centre in Tripoli, while a significant number—estimated at 340,000—entered through the southeastern city of Al Kufra, which has become a key entry point.

The continued influx is placing increasing pressure on Libya’s already strained infrastructure and public services.

As the conflict in Sudan persists, the number of refugees seeking safety in Libya is expected to rise further, raising concerns about the country’s capacity to cope with prolonged humanitarian pressures.
