The city of Al-Bayda is preparing to host one of Libya’s prominent sporting events as the 34th Libya Chess Championship kicks off this week, bringing together 26 top players from across the country in a highly anticipated national competition.

Organised by the Libyan Chess Federation, the championship will take place at the Marhaba Hotel and run for a full week, featuring intense matchups among leading chess talents representing clubs and sports institutions nationwide.

Strong Participation and Competitive Field

This year’s edition features 26 players competing for the national title, with many of Libya’s prominent chess figures aiming to assert their dominance on the domestic scene. The championship is expected to deliver a high level of competition, reflecting the growing strength of chess in Libya.

The tournament provides a key platform for players to test their skills, gain ranking experience, and strengthen their presence in the national chess landscape.

Swiss System Format Across Nine Rounds

The championship will follow the internationally recognised Swiss system tournament, with nine rounds scheduled. Players will be paired in each round based on previous results, ensuring balanced and competitive encounters throughout the tournament.

This format is widely used in major chess competitions worldwide, allowing all participants to play the same number of games while maintaining suspense until the final rounds.

Technical Meeting and Opening Round

A technical meeting is scheduled on the opening day at 4:00 PM at the tournament venue, bringing together organisers, referees, and players. The session will outline the competition rules, conduct the official draw, and determine pairings for the first round.

Matches will begin immediately after the meeting, marking the start of a week filled with tactical battles and strategic gameplay.

Al-Bayda Strengthens Role as Sports Host

Hosting the championship in Al-Bayda reflects the federation’s strategy to rotate events across Libyan cities, helping to expand the reach of chess and encourage wider participation.

Chess has seen growing popularity in Libya in recent years, with increasing efforts to organise tournaments, discover new talent, and develop players’ skills at both local and national levels.
