On Friday, a UN diplomatic source suggested that Bulgarian diplomat Nikolay Mladenov would take over the leadership of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
The diplomatic source, who refused to reveal his identity, said that Mladenov, born on May 5, 1972, was a Member of the European Parliament between 2007 and 2009.
He added that Mladenov held the position of Defence Minister of Bulgaria between 2009 and 2010. After that position, he became the Bulgarian Foreign Minister between 2010 and 2013.
The source noted: “Mladenov was appointed by Ban Ki-moon as the UN Representative in Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) in August 2013. He is currently holding the position of the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process.”
Notably, the UN Security Council has agreed to name a new special envoy for Libya and a “coordinator” who will be second in command, diplomats said Friday.
The Council will vote early next week on a draft resolution that would renew UNSMIL until September 15, 2021, and spell out the leadership structure.
