On Tuesday, the Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio held a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov. They discussed the most recent developments in the Libyan crisis.

A statement by the Italian MoFA, said that the two FMs stressed the need for a permanent ceasefire. They noted that a resolution to the conflict must be reached through open dialogue. Di Maio stated that any external interference in Libyan affairs must be stopped and stated that “Libya is an important player for us. It has a pivotal role in building a new model for development in the Mediterranean region.”

Notably, Lavrov held talks on Monday with Egyptian FM Sameh Shoukry, focusing on the conflict in Libya. Shoukry highlighted the importance of reaching a comprehensive ceasefire agreement, dismantling militias, expelling foreign forces, and reaching a decisive political solution.
