Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy held talks with Massad Boulos, Senior Adviser to US President Donald Trump for Arab and African Affairs, in Cairo on Saturday to discuss the latest political developments in Libya and several regional crises.

The meeting was Fahmy’s first official engagement since taking office as Arab League Secretary-General on 1 July 2026.

The Arab League said the discussions focused on the situation in Libya and the continuing conflict in Sudan, as well as ways to strengthen regional and international coordination on both files.

Boulos presented Washington’s assessment of developments in Libya and Sudan and discussed US proposals for addressing each crisis according to its circumstances.

Fahmy voiced the Arab League’s full support for a Libyan-led political process aimed at unifying the country’s divided institutions and holding presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.

He also reaffirmed the organisation’s support for Libya’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. Both sides called for continued coordination to advance the Libyan political process and support efforts to restore security and stability.

The talks also covered developments in Palestine, including the situations in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, as well as the crises in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Sudan.

Regional tensions involving the United States and Iran and their possible effects on Middle East stability were also discussed, with both officials supporting political solutions to contain tensions and prevent further escalation.

The meeting reflected efforts by the Arab League and the United States to maintain consultations on major regional issues and coordinate diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving conflicts.

The talks came one day after Boulos announced that US Chargé d’Affaires to Libya Jeremy Berndt had taken on an additional role as his Senior Policy Adviser for Libya. Boulos said the appointment formed part of Washington’s commitment to supporting Libyan efforts towards peace, unity, stability and prosperity
