US Calls on Russia-Turkey to not Intervene in Libya

On Friday the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, called on Russia and Turkey not to intervene in Libyan affairs. He called for allowing the Libyans to solve their problems themselves, through intra-Libyan dialogue.

Pompeo said that the interference of external parties “will exacerbate the situation in the country, as it has already been mired in chaos and war for years.”

The US Embassy in Libya tweeted, “We will use all the tools in our diplomatic arsenal to create the conditions for more stability, less risk, and ultimately a political process that gets us to resolution in Libya.”

It added that, “In that respect, Ambassador Norland held productive talks today with the Elysée & the Quai d’Orsay. His visit to Paris will be followed by consultations in other capitals. All these visits are in support of Libyan efforts to write their own future, through the UN-facilitated political process in Libya.”

Pompeo held a joint press conference with his Italian counterpart, Luigi Di Maio, in Rome. The two reviewed the joint efforts in recent weeks, regarding the Libyan crisis. He said that European countries have a primary role in supporting the Middle East peace process.

The US welcomed the Libyan-led talks in the Egyptian city of Hurghada. Washington considers the resumption of ‘5+5 Joint Military Commission negotiations as essential to sustain the ceasefire in Libya.
