On Monday, the Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams, launched the Legal Committee of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF).
The committee comprises of 18 LPDF members and is mandated to follow-up on the discussions of the constitutional committee, established by the Libyan Parliament and the High Council of State (HCS).
During the virtual meeting, Williams commended the progress being made and continuous positive indicators across the three intra-Libyan tracks. She reaffirmed the need to move forward with the political process and hold national elections on time.
She explained that the Legal Committee makes recommendations for assistance, including proposals on the appropriate constitutional basis or arrangements leading to the national elections.
“The committee shall inform the LPDF of the progress of discussions every two weeks. It also shall advise the LPDF on legal issues related to the legal framework necessary to carry out the elections on 24 December 2021,” UNSMIL noted.
The statement pointed out that, Williams welcomed the Government of National Accord’s (GNA) commitment towards the High National Election Commission (HNEC) to organise the elections. The mission confirmed that it has received 50 million Libyan dinars to prepare for next year’s national elections.
“This is excellent and encouraging news in support of the national elections that receives great attention from UNSMIL and the international community,” said Williams.
UNSMIL hailed the local municipal elections which are taking place in Al-Zawiya Al-Gharbia and Ar-Rajban, saying it is also another excellent and very encouraging sign.
