On Monday, the Secretary General of the Russian-Turkish Public Forum, Sergei Markov, said that Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, is set to hold a meeting tomorrow with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in the Russian city of Sochi. They are due to discuss the latest developments in Libya.
Cavusoglu will take part in the eight sessions of the Joint Strategic Planning Group, which forms part of the Turkish-Russian High Level Cooperation Council.
The meeting will review some outstanding regional issues, especially with regard to resolving the Libyan crisis. This is in addition to the conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
Lavrov confirmed Moscow is cooperating with several countries to ensure the ongoing political dialogue in Libya is successful. He indicated that they sought to launch comprehensive negotiations with all parties involved.
Currently, Libya has two parallel governments: the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) headed by Fayez Al-Sarraj, and Abdullah Al-Thinni’s Interim Government based in Benghazi. Al-Thinni’s government is supported by the Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Field Marshall Khalifa Haftar.
