Despite the domestic & international praise of the current positive steps taken towards elections, a number of Muslim Brotherhood members in Libya seek to disrupt and undermine efforts paving the way for the upcoming elections.
They declared full rejection of supporting the elections before holding a referendum on the constitution.
Meanwhile, Libyan woman set an outstanding example of patriotism, when the female members participating in the LPDF sessions emphasized the necessity of holding the Libyan elections as scheduled at the end of this year in line with the roadmap that was announced.
During the consultative sessions aimed at laying down the constitutional basis for the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections, the LPDF’s female members unanimously agreed on the need to uphold the Libyan people’s right to choose their President.
Salwa El-Dugheli, a member of the Legal Committee of the LPDF, said that it is necessary to hold direct parliamentary and presidential elections, stressing that the constitutional path is not within the jurisdiction of the Legal Committee.
Zahra Langi, another member of the Legal Committee, stressed that there is no legitimacy except for those who will be chosen by the Libyan people directly without tutelage, stating that the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections must be held on time.
On her part, Amal Bugaighis also showed a similar position, saying that it is not acceptable to deny the Libyans’ original right in electing their President.
Another LPDF member, Umm Al-Ezz Al-Farsi, confirmed that everyone wants direct presidential elections, saying that the decision to hold referendum is beyond the jurisdiction of the Legal Committee.
On the other hand, some members of the Muslim Brotherhood strongly criticized the call of the LPDF female members for holding direct elections, making public threats against them during the sessions.
They also claimed that they will take judicial measures in the event that the elections are held before the referendum.
The Head of the Libyan High National Elections (HNEC), Imad Al-Sayeh, also warned that holding the referendum on the constitution prior to the parliamentary and presidential elections would delay the holding of the long-awaited electoral process, indicating that there are some officials pushing towards disrupting the holding of direct elections.
