The frequent power cuts in the Libyan eastern city of Tobruk have prompted a team of doctors at Belkhather Hospital to perform a fibroid removal surgery using the flashlights of their mobile phones, Mustafa Al-Jahani, a media official at the hospital told reporters on Sunday.

The surgical procedures were successful, as the doctors were able to continue the rest of the operation using a generator.

Due to the electricity crisis in the country, blackouts and power failure have become a common phenomenon which has dire consequences for Libyans.

Notably, five people died in eastern Libya, in Cyrenaica, between June 27th and July 29th as a consequence of the electricity cuts, according to a recent report by the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL).

The victims include a mother and her son who died as a result of the explosion of a power generator in Benghazi on June 27th. A 14-year-old boy died in Benghazi after being electrically shocked when trying to turn off a power generator on July 24th.

Another person died in Benghazi as a result of an electric shock inside a power distribution station on July 29th. A mother also died due to a fire caused by having to light a candle in Ajdabiya on June 29th.
