The Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams, said that the year-long war is straining Libya’s ability to effectively deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, and could spell disaster for the war torn country.
“It’s incredibly reckless. It’s inhumane, it’s stretching the capacity of local authorities and the health infrastructure that is already decimated,” Williams stated in an interview with Bloomberg News, adding, “they’re whistling past the graveyard, that’s what they’re doing.”
“Every call for a truce, even when it’s accepted by both sides, seems to inevitably lead to an escalation, both by the parties on the ground, but also foreign sponsors,” Williams said, highlighting the continuous influence of foreign states in the battle for Tripoli.
