Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary General of the Arab League, called for an immediate end to the fighting throughout the region in order to face the COVID-19 epidemic.

In a statement, he claimed that millions were suffering in Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Libya and Lebanon, and a humanitarian truce was needed in these states to be able to address the global pandemic.

Aboul Gheit expressed his support for similar calls made by the Secretary-General of the United Nations and his envoys, pointing out that he had recently issued an appeal to all parties in Libya, Syria, and Yemen to bring an end to the fighting that has intensified after the outbreak of the epidemic

Aboul Gheit expressed his deep regret over the fact that Libya was still embroiled in conflict, since clashes broke out in the west of the country on April 4th 2019.
