The Council of Sheikhs and Tribes of Tarhouna strongly denounced the attacks and siege of the city by forces aligned to the Government of National Accord (GNA). The siege has targeted food, fuel and medical supplies, in addition to repeatedly causing power cuts throughout the city. In a statement, the Council claimed that the siege went against all ethical, human and religious teachings and values. It accused the GNA of putting the lives of tens of thousands of civilians at risk and disrupting vital institutions, especially during the current COVID-19 epidemic. The Council urged international, regional and local organizations to bring an end to the siege, which constitutes a flagrant violation of international human rights law, and the Geneva Convention. The Council concluded its statement by claiming that the safety and lives of civilians was paramount and that this siege would not go unnoticed.
