Libyan Parliamentary Committee Holds Individual Groups Responsible for Rejecting Humanitarian Truce

On Sunday, The Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in the Libyan House of Representatives (HOR) called on all parties in the Libyan conflict to adhere to the humanitarian truce advocated by the international community during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Parliamentary Committee said that parties which refused to accept the truce would be held responsible for the human suffering and property losses to which civilians are exposed. It added that such acts are considered a violation of humanitarian and international law.

Yusef Al-Agouri, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the HOR, appealed to the international community to shoulder its responsibilities towards civilians in Libya by taking a firm stance towards those who did not abide by the humanitarian truce.

Al-Agouri renewed the Committee’s calls to give priority to humanitarian relief efforts, most notably the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Thursday, the Libyan National Army (LNA) announced it would abide by a ceasefire during the holy month of Ramadan, stressing that this came at the request of the international community.

In response, the Presidential Council of Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA) announced that it would continue to legitimately defend itself, arguing that the past violations by the LNA make it impossible to believe any declaration of a truce.
