The General Command of the Libyan National Army (LNA) denied targeting diplomatic headquarters in Tripoli, noting that the LNA has expressly pledged to protect the foreign embassies, international organisations and state institutions.

In a statement on Friday, LNA spokesperson Major General Ahmed Al-Mismari said that the army’s operations “aim to protect the country and its guests from terrorism and criminal gangs, in order to assure Libyans and the international community that they are fighting for peace, security and stability”.

Mismari added that unscrupulous extremist armed groups do not hesitate to commit immoral crimes against foreign embassies and international organisations to pit international opinion against the LNA.

The LNA spokesperson also noted that foreign embassies and international organisations have been subject to targeting, assault, robbery and looting by the militias controlling the capital over the past years.

He denied accusations that the LNA could commit such acts that contradict international conventions, laws and norms.
