LNA Announces Withdrawal of Forces From Tripoli Frontline

On Tuesday, the spokesman for the Libyan National Army (LNA) Major General Ahmed Al-Mismari said that the LNA had decided to withdraw its forces 2-3 kilometers from the frontlines in Tripoli.

According to Mismari, this is to allow people in the city to move more freely during the final days of Ramadan and subsequent Eid Al-Fitr festivities.

In a statement, Al-Mismari added that LNA forces will start retreating from their current positions in the city from midday on Wednesday, in a bid to avoid bloodshed during the last days of the holy month of Ramadan.

He also called on forces aligned with the Government of National Accord (GNA) to do the same and to avoid renewed clashes during this period.

“The LNA has unilaterally declared a ceasefire, however, the GNA rejected the humanitarian truce.” Al-Mismari stated, adding that Turkish-backed GNA forces bombed residential neighborhoods, medical facilities, and humanitarian aid vehicles.

Earlier on Monday, the Prime Minister of the GNA, Fayez Al-Sarraj, announced that forces aligned with the GNA had taken control of Al-Watiya airbase, one of the LNA’s last strongholds in western Libya.

Al-Mismari stated in a press conference on Tuesday that the LNA had started the process of withdrawing troops and equipment from Al-Watiya airbase months ago.
