Russia Welcomes Egypt’s Efforts to Achieve Comprehensive Ceasefire in Libya

On Saturday, the Russian Embassy in Cairo welcomed efforts aimed at settling the conflict in Libya.

In a statement, the Embassy said that the Egypt-led initiative — dubbed the “Cairo Declaration” — is a step towards a comprehensive solution to the Libyan crisis that aims to achieve an immediate ceasefire, disbanding armed militias and pulling foreign fighters out of Libyan territory.

“We welcome all efforts aimed at settling the conflict and restoring peace in all the Libyan territory.”

On Saturday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced a political initiative to solve the Libyan crisis, arguing that there could be no military solution to the conflict.

“The initiative calls for a ceasefire, the removal of mercenaries, and the dismantling of militias in Libya,” Sisi said during a press conference in Cairo with Libyan Parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh and Libyan National Army (LNA) Commander Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.

The “Cairo Declaration” mandates a Libyan-Libyan resolution as a basis for resolving the country’s conflict under resolutions by the UN and past efforts in Paris, Rome, Abu Dhabi, and most recently Berlin.
