The Appeals Chamber at the International Criminal Court (ICC) has unanimously confirmed the admissibility of the case filed against Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi, son of late Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, over charges of committing human rights violations.

In a press release, the ICC said that the Court rejected Gaddafi’s appeal against the Pre-Trial Chamber’s decision, dismissing his challenge to the admissibility of the case.

Libya was referred to the ICC Prosecutor by the United Nations Security Council in 2011 via Resolution 1970.

On 3 March 2011, the ICC launched its investigation on Libya.

On 27 June 2011, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Muammar Gaddafi, Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi and former Intelligence Chief Abdullah Al-Senussi for crimes against humanity that were allegedly committed across Libya in the events of the Arab Spring.

The ICC based at The Hague formally terminated the case against Muammar Gaddafi on 22 November 2011, due to his death.
