Libya Praises African Union’s Permanent G20 Membership

On Sunday, the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs warmly welcomed the African Union’s (AU) acquisition of permanent membership status in the G20, during the group’s summit held in New Delhi, India.

In a statement, the ministry further added that such a representation “would better equip the AU to engage with global challenge while infusing an unmistakably African vision—one anchored in the ideals of unity, fairness, and the pursuit of a more equitable world.”
Furthermore, the statement emphasised that this advancement will “play a pivotal role in addressing international challenges and concerns, providing insights grounded in Africa’s unified stance. It underscores the continent’s commitment to fostering a just and stable global landscape.”

Highlighting the significance of this development, the Foreign Ministry pointed out its alignment with the commemoration of the declaration of the establishment of the African Union in Sirte City on 9 September, 1999.

Libya, a founding member of the OAU, and an active AU member, has always championed the cause of a unified African voice in global matters. The AU’s permanent membership in the G20 is not just a diplomatic victory for the union, but also underscores the growing recognition of Africa’s role in global economic and political affairs. This move is expected to bridge the gap between African interests, and global economic strategies.

In recent times, the global community has been acknowledging Africa’s potential as a future economic powerhouse. The continent boasts some of the world’s fastest-growing economies, an abundant supply of natural resources, and a young, dynamic population. The G20’s inclusion of the AU is a nod to this potential, and a signal of a more inclusive global economic discourse.
