Luigi Di Maio, Italy’s Foreign Minister, has decided to postpone an official visit to Turkey, according to the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
Di Maio’s visit to Turkey, previously scheduled for 17 June 2020, was postponed to Friday 19 June, the Turkish Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
At Friday’s meeting, Di Maio and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu are set to discuss bilateral relations between Turkey and Italy, as well as Turkey’s EU accession process.
They are also set to exchange views on current regional and international developments, as well as the global fight against COVID-19.
Within the scope of regional issues on the agenda, the developments in Libya – as well as Turkey’s hydrocarbon exploration and drilling activities in the eastern Mediterranean – will likely come up during the meeting.
On Wednesday, the Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, held a meeting with a high level delegation from Turkey. The Turkish delegation included Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Treasury and Finance Minister Berat Albayrak, and National Intelligence Organization Chief Hakan Fidan.
During the meeting, they discussed current international efforts to solve the Libyan crisis and a number of avenues for cooperation in various fields.
The situation in Libya has worsened in recent months due to interventions by foreign powers. This comes despite international actors pledged to refrain from intervening in Libya during a high-profile peace summit in Berlin earlier this year.
