Italy Calls For Halt of Arms Flow To Libya

Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio called for a halt to the flow of arms to Libya, which violates the UN arms embargo.

Upon his return to Rome after his recent visit to Tripoli, Di Maio stated that the European Union’s “IRINI” operation could play a fundamental role in this regard.

He said that he assured the Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez AlSarraj, that Italy was determined to ensure that Operation “IRINI” would be fair and impartial, according to Italian news agency Agenzia Nova on Wednesday.

Di Maio emphasized that the mandate of the operation was determined “in a manner that enables the monitoring, detection and reporting to the United Nations on every violation of the embargo.”

“It is important that the confrontations at the new front line of Sirte do not become a springboard for further military escalation. It should be an opportunity to negotiate a permanent ceasefire that includes all actors,” Di Maio said.
