On Tuesday, Libya’s Prime Minister of the Parliament-designate government, Osama Hammad embarked on an inspection tour of neighborhoods in Derna affected by the Mediterranean Storm Daniel. The tour aimed at laying the groundwork for compensating the affected residents followed by the distributions of new residential apartments.

During his visit, Hammad inspected several buildings, which were severely affected by flooding from Storm Daniel. He met with Derna residents to discuss their needs and announced his government’s plan to demolish unsafe buildings.

The residents affected by these demolitions will receive rental payments for 6 to 10 months, with plans to provide them new apartments upon their completion.

Hammad was joined by several officials, including the Director-General of Libya’s Development and Reconstruction Fund Belgassim Khalifa Haftar, Hatem Al-Araibi, the Head of the Reconstruction and Stability Committee, and Abu Bakr Masadef, the Deputy Minister of Local Government.

On 10 September 2023, a devastating storm swept through several eastern regions of Libya, notably the cities of Derna, Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Al-Marj, and Sousse. This resulted in significant destruction and led to the loss of thousands of lives, injuries, and missing individuals.

The government’s proactive measures in Derna are a testament to its commitment to its citizens’ safety and security. By setting a precedent for disaster response and rehabilitation, Libya is demonstrating the importance of prepared leadership and structured planning in overcoming the adverse effects of catastrophic events. This not only aids in the immediate recovery process but also strengthens the community’s resilience against future disasters.
