On Tuesday, the Interim Government’s Prime Minister, Abdullah Al-Thinni, issued a decision to form a committee to document human rights violations in the western region of the country.

In accordance with Resolution No. 84 of 2020, the committee will be assigned to monitor and document violations of human rights, international law, relevant conventions,
covenants and legislation that have occurred in the west of the country.

The committee will determine, according to the same resolution, “the type of violations that are classified as war crimes and crimes against humanity, according to the international and national classification”.

The committee is also expected “to perform its duties in any city or region of Libya subjected to the aforementioned violations”.

This is provided that the committee presents its report and recommendations to the Prime Minister “within one month from the date of receiving this decision”.

Notably, forces loyal to the Government of National Accord (GNA) have carried out a campaign of arrests, arson, and looting across Tarhuna after seizing the western town from Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA).
