The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ageela Saleh, held a meeting with the Deputy Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General and Acting Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Khoury, to discuss the latest developments in Libya and ways to resolve the ongoing crisis.
The meeting, held in Ageela Saleh’s office in the city of Al-Qubba, reaffirmed the House of Representatives’ commitment to the current requirements of this critical phase.
The Speaker highlighted the issuance of the 13th Constitutional Amendment and the passage of presidential and parliamentary election laws aimed at fulfilling the Libyan people’s will without exclusion or marginalisation.
This session was an opportunity to reiterate that the solution in Libya can only be through presidential and parliamentary elections, where the Libyan people must be free to choose their leaders in free and fair elections.
Ageela Saleh emphasised the need to form a unified government that would oversee these elections and ensure the unification of all existing divisions to serve the Libyan people’s interest.
Stephanie Khoury commended the efforts of the House of Representatives and its leadership to hold elections and unify institutions.
Khoury, on the “X” platform, confirmed that the meeting addressed contentious issues related to electoral laws, highlighting the importance of constructive dialogue among Libyan leaders to form a unified government leading the country towards elections.
She expressed her support for the UN-facilitated political process aiming to achieve stability and unity in Libya.
This meeting is crucial, occurring at a sensitive time for Libya, as both international and local communities strive to find lasting solutions to the political and security crisis that has gripped the country for years.
The House of Representatives’ commitment to issuing the 13th Constitutional Amendment and approving election laws reflects a genuine desire to move forward towards democracy and stability. However, the real challenge lies in implementing these laws on the ground and ensuring that the elections are free and transparent.
The UN’s support for this process enhances the chances of success, but the most important factor remains the will of the Libyan people and their leaders to reach genuine agreements that ensure the nation’s interest above all else.
Forming a unified government is a fundamental step to ensure the organisation and supervision of elections in a manner that achieves justice and transparency.
