The European Union Mission and the embassies of EU member states in Libya expressed deep concern over the worsening situation in Libya amid increasing political divisions and the absence of unified institutions.
In a joint statement released on Friday, they urged all Libyan parties to engage constructively and in good faith to seek a negotiated solution. The statement affirmed the EU’s readiness to actively support this process, including efforts to restore Libya’s path towards forming a unified government and holding national elections.
The EU delegation and embassies called on all Libyan leaders to prioritise national interests, reduce tensions, refrain from using force or threats, and lift the state of force majeure on all oil fields. They highlighted that intimidation of members of the High Council of State, Central Bank of Libya staff, oil field closures, and disruptions to banking services are worsening an already fragile situation, threatening the economic lifelines of the Libyan people.
The statement noted that the continuation of unilateral actions and personalised management of state institutions and resources jeopardises Libya’s financial and economic stability, risking further escalation of the protracted crisis in the country.
Furthermore, the EU mission and embassies expressed their support for the UN Support Mission in Libya’s call for urgent steps to de-escalate the situation. They welcomed the initiative to hold an emergency meeting of all concerned parties to resolve the Central Bank crisis peacefully.
