Libya’s Prime Minister of the Parliament-designate government, Osama Hammad pledged to ensure the return of displaced residents to Merzouk. This commitment comes as part of a broader effort to support those affected by years of conflict, displacement, and war in the region.
Hammad made his promise following the signing of a comprehensive reconciliation agreement between Merzouk’s residents and the Tebu community. He described the accord as a “historic achievement” and emphasised his government’s commitment to implementing its terms on the ground. This includes assessing the damage in Merzouk and initiating reconstruction and development projects,l.
Welcoming the return of normalcy to the city, Hammad praised the peaceful coexistence between the local residents and the Tebu community. He commended all parties for prioritising the welfare of their city and country over individual interests. “The people of Merzouk and the Tebu have chosen to put national interests above all conflicts and personal gains,” he stated.
Hammad expressed his vision of Merzouk becoming the “jewel of progress and prosperity” in southern Libya. “We stand on the brink of a new chapter in our nation’s history, with the primary goal of achieving security, peace, and stability, while upholding steadfast values and noble principles,” he added.
He also highlighted the resilience of Merzouk’s residents, noting, “Merzouk, with the bravery of its people and the enduring strength of its fort, will bear witness to the fulfilment of our promises. Peace and stability will prevail, and development will reach all cities and regions.”
The reconciliation agreement was formally signed on Thursday in the presence of the Libyan National Army’s Commander-in-Chief, Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, and the House of Representatives Speaker, Ageela Saleh.
The pact, reached after years of strife, sets clear terms for ceasing hostilities, includes mechanisms for monitoring compliance, assesses damage, and compensates those affected, aiming to restore peace and stability in the city.
