US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdel-Atty discussed the situation in Libya during their strategic dialogue.

Both sides stressed the importance of intensifying international efforts to secure a political solution that guarantees Libya’s stability.

Abdel-Atty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting Libya’s unity and sovereignty, highlighting that Libya’s stability is crucial for security in North Africa.

Blinken emphasized US support for Egypt’s efforts in stabilizing Libya, including backing Libyan government institutions and providing necessary humanitarian aid. The discussions underscored the need to prevent foreign interference that destabilizes the country.

Both ministers agreed on the importance of diplomatic efforts to bring Libya’s warring factions to the negotiation table, viewing this as a priority for regional peace.

The two sides also touched on economic cooperation, with Egypt proposing that joint economic initiatives, such as in the renewable energy sector, could contribute to long-term stability in Libya.

Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.

Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.
