Foreign Ministers of UAE and Germany Discuss Situation In Libya

UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah Bin Zayed and his German counterpart Heiko Maas discussed the current situation in Libya and the Middle East peace process in a phone call.

The two sides discussed the latest developments in the region, in addition to a number of regional and international issues of common concern.

They reviewed efforts by the two countries to contain the global COVID-19 pandemic, according to a statement reported by the Saudi Press Agency on Thursday.

Last Tuesday, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash warned that “the drums of war beating around Sirte risk leading to serious humanitarian and political consequences”.

He called for an immediate ceasefire and a push for dialogue between the warring parties in Libya under the auspices of the United Nations.

In his speech during the Security Council session last Thursday, Maas described the continued flow of arms and mercenaries to Libya as “cynical absurdity”. He called for respect for the UN arms embargo and demanded that the Libyan parties “make Sirte a demilitarized zone”.
