Russia Praises Saleh’s Initiative As Basis for Ending Crisis

On Monday, the Russian President’s envoy to the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov, voiced his hope to end all hostilities in Libya and resume political dialogue.

In press statements, Bogdanov stressed the importance of working jointly to reach a solution based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and outcomes of the Berlin Conference.

“Moscow will encourage all external players to contribute to a settlement in Libya, there is no military solution there”, Bogdanov noted.

The Russian official praised the Cairo Declaration and the initiative proposed by Libyan Parliament Speaker Ageela Saleh. He described them as good basis for ending the escalating conflict.

“We will continue to push Ankara to constructively influence the Government of National Accord (GNA). At the same time, we are working with the Americans, Europeans, and leading regional countries to reach a permanent political solution to the Libyan crisis”, Bogdanov concluded.

Libya has been marred in chaos since the ouster and killing of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. It now has two rival authorities and a multitude of militias vying for control of the country.

The GNA is based in Tripoli, while Khalifa Haftar, the commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), supports a parallel administration based in the east.
