Ageela Saleh Urges Continued National Support for Derna’s Reconstruction

On Thursday, Libyan House of Representatives Speaker Ageela Saleh met with a delegation from the Youth Association and Political Committee of Derna at his office in Al-Qubbah City.

The meeting focused on the latest political developments in Libya and ongoing efforts to rebuild the city of Derna, which suffered severe damage following the devastating impact of Storm Daniel in September 2023.

During the discussion, Saleh and the delegation reviewed the current state of the Libyan crisis on various fronts, including political, institutional, and humanitarian dimensions. A key part of the meeting centered on the reconstruction and development of Derna, which remains one of the areas most affected by the deadly floods caused by the storm.

The delegation praised Saleh’s role in issuing urgent directives to support the reconstruction process and emphasized the importance of sustained efforts to restore essential infrastructure, improve living conditions, and promote long-term development in the city.

Derna, once a cultural and coastal hub in eastern Libya, was left in ruins after torrential rainfall caused two dams to collapse, unleashing catastrophic floods that swept through neighborhoods and left thousands dead and missing.

The disaster has since become a symbol of both the vulnerability and resilience of Libyan communities, as well as a test of the country’s political leadership in responding to large-scale humanitarian crises.

As Libya remains divided between rival political administrations, local initiatives such as this meeting highlight the continued need for coordinated national responses to recovery and reconstruction, particularly in heavily impacted areas like Derna.

Saleh reaffirmed his commitment to supporting reconstruction efforts and stressed the need for unity in addressing the broader challenges facing the country.
