The Libyan Foreign Ministry of the Government of National Unity (GNU) has welcomed the decision to lift sanctions imposed on Syria, calling it a “significant step” toward reintegrating Syria into its regional and international environment. The announcement came on Tuesday in conjunction with US President Donald Trump’s visit to the Saudi capital, Riyadh.
In a statement published on its official Facebook page, the ministry described the decision as “a glimmer of hope to end the suffering of the Syrian people” and a step that “paves the way for national recovery efforts, reconstruction, and strengthening Syria’s unity and sovereignty.”
The GNU reiterated Libya’s solidarity with Syria and expressed full support for measures that could contribute to the country’s stability and prosperity. The statement highlighted the shared principles governing relations between the two nations and Libya’s ongoing commitment to peaceful solutions and constructive cooperation among peoples and states.
The move to lift sanctions follows discussions between President Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Speaking in Riyadh, Trump confirmed he had decided to lift the sanctions on Syria after talks with the crown prince, saying the measure was intended to “give Syrians a new chance.”
Libya’s endorsement of the decision aligns with broader regional efforts to re-engage with Syria diplomatically after years of isolation due to its prolonged conflict. The GNU’s statement marks Libya as one of the early Arab governments to voice public support for Syria’s reintegration and recovery.
The foreign ministry concluded by reaffirming its commitment to supporting initiatives that restore Syria’s role within the Arab region and on the global stage.
