The United States Ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, welcomed the momentum created by the Cairo Declaration, announced by President Abdel-Fatah El-Sisi, on the 6th of June.

This came during his visit to Cairo, to discuss with senior Egyptian officials the necessary steps to achieve a lasting ceasefire, a full withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries, and support for UN-facilitated political dialogue in Libya.

Norland’s visit also came following recent discussions about Libya between US President Donald Trump, and President El-Sisi. There were also talks between Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Egyptian Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry.

Ambassador Norland underscored the US’ support for all leaders seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict, to restore Libya’s sovereignty, promote economic reforms, and prevent further foreign escalation.

The Ambassador also met with the Libyan Parliament Speaker, Ageela Saleh, in Cairo. This was to learn more about the parliament’s efforts to promote a demilitarised solution for Sirte and Al-Jufra.

They also discussed ways to enable the National Oil Corporation (NOC) to resume its vital work, while ensuring that oil and gas revenues are managed transparently.

Norland expressed his support for Saleh’s aspirations, and all Libyan elements responsible for reaching a political solution to ensure a stable and prosperous future for the Libyan people.
