Libya has secured a significant diplomatic achievement after the Pan-African Parliament agreed to adopt a Libyan proposal that permanently includes two key issues, Palestine and sanctions on African nations, on its official agenda.
The move, confirmed by House of Representatives spokesperson Abdullah Bliheg, reflects growing continental unity on matters of sovereignty, justice, and international accountability.
The proposal was introduced by Libyan lawmaker Yousef al-Fakhri, a member of the Pan-African Parliament’s leadership bureau. It received full support during the leadership’s preparatory meetings held in Johannesburg, South Africa. The endorsement signals an important moment for Libya’s role in shaping regional priorities and amplifying African positions on global platforms.
Bliheg stated that enshrining the Palestinian issue as a permanent topic of discussion demonstrates a principled commitment by African lawmakers to justice and the rights of oppressed populations. By institutionalizing this issue within the parliamentary framework, the Pan-African Parliament sends a clear message of solidarity with the Palestinian people and reinforces the continent’s historic support for their struggle.
Equally important is the inclusion of economic sanctions imposed on African states as a recurring item. Bliheg emphasized that making this a standing topic will allow African legislators to consistently assess, debate, and respond to the effects of unilateral sanctions that hinder development and infringe on national sovereignty. He described the move as a “progressive step” that strengthens Africa’s collective voice in both regional and international forums.
The initiative also reflects a broader vision by Libyan lawmakers to reengage with African institutions and support efforts to unify the continent around shared causes.
