The Libyan Center for Desert Research and Development of Desert Communities has announced plans to open a new branch in the southeastern city of Kufra, as part of its ongoing efforts to promote scientific knowledge and community development across Libya’s desert regions.

The Director-General of the Libyan Desert Research Centre, accompanied by several department heads, office managers, and university faculty members, arrived in Kufra to oversee the opening process and engage with local stakeholders.

Upon their arrival, the delegation was warmly welcomed by key officials from Kufra Municipality, including the Mayor, Deputy Secretary of the Municipal Office, Head of the Council of Elders, Director of the Electricity Department, Head of the Ambulance Authority, and the Deputy for Academic Affairs at Kufra University. The reception also included a number of respected local figures, elders, and community leaders.

The opening of the new branch is part of the centre’s broader strategy to increase outreach, foster local engagement, and provide research-based solutions tailored to Libya’s desert environment and rural communities. Officials emphasized the importance of scientific investment in underserved areas and highlighted Kufra’s strategic position as a hub for future desert development initiatives.

Libya’s vast desert regions represent a critical part of the country’s ecological and socio-economic landscape. Through field research, community integration, and partnerships with local institutions, the centre aims to promote sustainable development, improve living conditions, and empower desert communities.

The new branch in Kufra is expected to serve as a platform for research, training, and community-oriented projects focusing on desert agriculture, climate studies, water resource management, and rural innovation.
