Libya and Greece are preparing to hold a joint technical committee meeting in October to address ongoing disputes over maritime zones, according to Greek daily Kathimerini.

The Greek delegation will be led by Deputy Foreign Minister Alexandra Papadopoulou, who will head Athens’ negotiating team after Greece extended an open invitation to Libya to restart the stalled talks.

Greek officials stressed that Athens’ approach to Libya is independent of Turkish influence, focusing instead on maintaining direct and open communication with both eastern and western Libyan factions. This comes after a series of Greek diplomatic visits to Benghazi and Tripoli aimed at easing tensions and fostering dialogue.

Libyan delegations representing both regions, including members of the eastern political bloc and a son of Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, are expected to visit Athens in the coming weeks as part of the preparatory process.

The talks are viewed as a significant step in managing contested maritime boundaries in the Mediterranean, an issue that has long strained relations between Greece, Libya, and regional stakeholders.
