Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko received Libya’s Deputy General Commander, General Saddam Haftar, in Minsk on Tuesday as part of an official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between Libya and Belarus across several key sectors.

According to a statement from the Libyan General Command, the talks focused on enhancing ties between the two countries, particularly in the military, economic, and investment fields. Both sides discussed practical steps to promote partnerships in infrastructure, industry, and agriculture, contributing to sustainable development and supporting reconstruction efforts in Libya.

During the meeting, General Haftar conveyed greetings from Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the General Commander of the Libyan Armed Forces, to President Lukashenko. He commended the solid relations between the two nations and reaffirmed the General Command’s commitment to further deepening cooperation in ways that serve mutual stability and regional peace.

The visit follows growing military cooperation between Libya and Belarus. In September, the Libyan Army’s War Information Division announced the graduation of a new batch from the “87th Rapid Intervention Battalion,” who completed advanced training programmes in Belarus lasting over a year.

The training included anti-terrorism tactics, sniper and mortar operations, building assault techniques, and airborne missions. Live-fire exercises with various weapon systems were conducted to enhance the combat efficiency and field capabilities of Libyan forces in partnership with Belarusian instructors.

General Saddam Haftar’s visit underscores the Libyan General Command’s increasing focus on diversifying international partnerships and building strategic cooperation with friendly nations. The move aims to strengthen national capabilities and contribute to broader efforts to maintain security and stability in Libya and the region.
