The 5+5 Libyan Joint Military Commission (JMC) reaffirmed its full commitment to the implementation of the ceasefire agreement signed between Libya’s rival parties on October 23, 2020, marking its fifth anniversary with renewed calls for unity, stability, and the preservation of Libya’s sovereignty.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the JMC commended the sustained success of the ceasefire deal, which was reached under the auspices of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The commission emphasized that the agreement remains a cornerstone of national peace efforts and a symbol of Libyan ownership of the peace process.
The JMC underscored that the ceasefire was built on fundamental principles — including the unity of Libyan territory, the protection of national borders by land, sea, and air, and the rejection of any external interference in the country’s decision-making or resources.
“The agreement was designed to preserve peace, promote tolerance, and encourage cooperation among Libyans,” the statement read. “It successfully ended years of fighting and continues to hold without major violations, thanks to the dedication of the JMC’s subcommittees and their ongoing monitoring efforts.”
However, the commission acknowledged that the persistent political division and the delay in national elections remain serious obstacles to Libya’s full recovery. Despite these challenges, it reaffirmed its unwavering determination to continue implementing all provisions of the ceasefire, particularly the withdrawal of all foreign forces, mercenaries, and foreign fighters from Libyan territory, as well as the dismantling of armed groups operating outside state control.
Concluding its statement, the JMC called on all Libyan factions and institutions to uphold their national responsibilities, stressing that peace and sovereignty can only be achieved through unity, reconciliation, and respect for the ceasefire agreement that has preserved the country from renewed conflict for five years.
