The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has unveiled new details about its political roadmap, outlining a timeline of 12 to 18 months that will culminate in national elections accepted by all Libyan parties.

In a statement released on its official page, the mission explained that the structured national dialogue, one of the core phases of the roadmap, will last between four and six months. It added that the criteria for selecting participants will be announced soon, ensuring a balanced representation across Libya’s regions and communities, including women, youth, political parties, cultural components, civil society, municipalities, and trade unions.

UNSMIL reaffirmed that the plan envisions the formation of a new unified government with a limited mandate, which would oversee the elections and operate in line with principles of good governance and accountability. However, the mission emphasized that agreement on the electoral framework must precede the formation of such a government to ensure legitimacy and transparency.

The roadmap also introduces mechanisms to prevent political obstruction, including potential sanctions by the UN Security Council against individuals or groups attempting to derail the process. UNSMIL confirmed it will provide bi-monthly briefings to the Council on the progress of implementation and on any obstruction efforts that may emerge.
