Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC) Chairman Emad Al-Sayeh met on Sunday with Italian Ambassador Gianluca Alberini in Tripoli to discuss continued Italian support for the upcoming stages of Libya’s municipal elections, as the country moves forward with its local democratic process.
According to a statement from the HNEC, the meeting focused on the latest developments in the municipal election program for 2025, particularly the third group of municipalities scheduled to hold elections in the coming months.
The two officials reviewed progress made so far, including the voter registration phase, which opened on October 20 in several municipalities, and assessed the successful completion of the first round of voting earlier this month in 16 municipalities.
Both sides agreed that the first phase was a model of transparency and organization, reflecting effective coordination between the Commission, local authorities, and international partners. Al-Sayeh emphasized that maintaining public confidence and integrity remains central to the Commission’s mission as it prepares for the next stages of the process.
The discussions also addressed technical and administrative preparations for the upcoming elections, ensuring they meet international standards of fairness and accountability. Ambassador Alberini praised the HNEC for its professionalism, describing its work as crucial to Libya’s stability and democratic transition.
He reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting the Commission and other national institutions working toward a peaceful and credible electoral process.
Al-Sayeh expressed appreciation for Italy’s continued engagement and assistance, noting that international cooperation plays a vital role in sustaining Libya’s progress toward transparent governance and institutional legitimacy. He reiterated that the HNEC is fully prepared to move forward according to its electoral schedule, ensuring that Libyans can freely exercise their democratic rights at the local level.
Both parties reaffirmed their shared commitment to free, fair, and inclusive elections that reflect the will of the Libyan people and strengthen the foundations of democracy.
