Libyan MP Condemns Attempts to Restore Skhirat Agreement as a Violation of Parliament’s Decision

Parliament Member Mohammed Al-Abani denounced the attempts to restore the Skhirat Agreement by describing such attempts as being “fractured” and considering them as a flagrant violation of the Libyan Parliament’s decisions.

Al-Abani indicated that the Libyan Parliament, in its meeting chaired by the second deputy in Benghazi on April 1, 2016, decided to cancel what it had approved in its session conducted on January 25, 2016, regarding the ratification of the Skhirat Agreement.

“Restoring the fractured Skhirat Agreement will increase the tension of the political situation and further confuse the political scene. There is no point in thinking inside the box,” he said in a post on his personal Facebook account.

In December 2015, the Skhirat Agreement was signed by major parties in the Libyan conflict under the supervision of UN envoy Martin Kobler in the city of Skhirat, Morocco. The agreement recommends a peaceful transition of power and the establishment of a national unity government. However, the agreement failed to achieve the desired stability in Libya because it lacked consensus.
