Libya’s Sirte Road Expansion Enters Second Phase

Libya’s National Development Agency has launched the second phase of the coastal road expansion project in the center of Sirte, continuing efforts to upgrade the city’s transport infrastructure and improve urban mobility.

The agency confirmed that the new phase covers the section of the dual carriageway extending from Neighborhood No. 1 Park to the Al-Zaafran area, one of the most important traffic corridors inside the city. The project is part of a comprehensive plan to modernize Sirte’s road network and enhance the efficiency of internal and coastal transport routes.

According to officials, the expansion works are being carried out within a broader urban development vision aimed at improving infrastructure quality, reducing traffic congestion, and enhancing the city’s overall appearance. The project seeks to ensure smoother vehicle movement, shorten travel times, and increase safety for road users, particularly in densely populated and high-traffic areas.

The agency explained that the road expansion is being implemented in multiple, carefully planned stages based on detailed engineering and traffic studies. These studies identified key locations for the construction of modern roundabouts designed to regulate traffic flow, reduce congestion points, and lower the risk of accidents. The upgraded design is expected to significantly improve road capacity while maintaining traffic continuity during peak hours.

Officials stressed that the project reflects a broader development approach aimed at adapting Sirte’s infrastructure to ongoing urban growth and future expansion. Improving road connectivity is viewed as a critical factor in supporting economic activity, facilitating the movement of goods and people, and enhancing access between residential neighborhoods and service areas.

The National Development Agency noted that road infrastructure projects play a vital role in improving quality of life and creating a safer urban environment. The agency added that additional development stages are planned as part of a long-term strategy to rehabilitate key transport routes and public spaces across Sirte.
