Gaza-Bound Convoy Enters Libya Amid Regional Tensions

Activists on social media reported on Sunday that the “Sumud Flotilla 2” entered Libya from Tunisia through the Ras Ajdir Border Crossing as part of a renewed attempt to reach the Gaza Strip and challenge the Israeli blockade imposed on the Palestinian territory.

According to participants and online reports, the flotilla includes activists from Tunisia, Algeria, Mauritania and several other countries seeking to continue an overland solidarity journey toward Gaza Strip.

The convoy marks the group’s third attempt to reach Gaza after two previous efforts through Libya and the Mediterranean Sea failed during recent months.

During the first attempt in June 2026, the overland convoy halted near the western outskirts of Sirte, ending the journey before participants could continue toward the Egyptian border.

In parallel with the land initiative, vessels linked to the “Global Sumud Flotilla” sailed toward Gaza in April. However, Israeli naval forces intercepted the ships and detained 211 activists on board, according to organisers and international activists involved in the campaign.

The renewed movement arrives amid heightened regional tensions surrounding the humanitarian situation in Gaza and increasing international calls for expanded humanitarian access to the territory.

Libya has increasingly become a transit point for regional solidarity initiatives due to its strategic geographic position linking North Africa to Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean.

No official statement has yet been issued by Libyan authorities regarding the movement of the flotilla inside Libyan territory or potential arrangements for its continued journey eastward.

Observers say the group’s progress through Libya could face logistical and security challenges similar to previous attempts, particularly given ongoing political and security complexities in parts of the country.
