Egypt Is Committed to Ending the Military Conflict in Libya

On Wednesday, the Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said that Cairo is committed to ending the military conflict in Libya.

Shoukry participated in the 24th round table session, organised by the Economist group. He explained that Egypt’s signing of the maritime border agreements with Cyprus and Greece would maximize the benefits from the natural resources that the Mediterranean holds and added that the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum aims to create a platform to ensure energy security, and enhance cooperation projects.

Earlier this week, Shoukry stated that Egypt supports all efforts to settle the conflict in Libya. He also said that Cairo has no reservations over any Libyan party participating in the political process.

During a press conference with his Armenian counterpart, Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, Shoukry said Egypt was adamant in finding a Libyan-led political solution, under the auspices of the United Nations. He also stressed the need to protect the country’s territorial integrity, and respect the relevant international decisions. “Egypt has intervened to stabilize the military situation in Libya,” Shoukry stated.

The Egyptian FM noted that there are “external interventions to serve expansionist policies in Libya, and the region.” He also criticized “those who bring foreign fighters, and terrorist organisations to Libya,” in reference to Turkey.
