More than 250 families have been displaced in the municipality of Tehala in southwestern Libya after heavy rainfall and flash floods swept through the area, damaging residential neighborhoods and forcing hundreds of residents to flee their homes.
The severe weather struck the region on Wednesday evening, triggering widespread flooding that inundated roads, homes, and public facilities. Local authorities and humanitarian organizations launched emergency response efforts to assist affected residents and reduce the impact of the disaster.
Rescue teams from the Libyan Red Crescent’s Ghat branch provided urgent humanitarian assistance to displaced families and worked to establish temporary shelters and accommodation sites for those forced to leave their homes. Relief teams also distributed essential supplies and sought to ensure the safety of residents as unstable weather conditions continued across the region.
Local sources reported that approximately 250 families were displaced from several neighborhoods, including Al-Ghalaba, Al-Khamsin, the Chinese Company district, and the Housing District, along with other affected areas within the municipality. Floodwaters submerged streets and residential properties, causing damage to both public and private infrastructure.
As part of efforts to assess the situation on the ground, the Director of the Ghat Security Directorate arrived in Tehala to evaluate the scale of the damage and coordinate response measures with local authorities and emergency teams. Officials are working to identify urgent needs and support recovery efforts for affected communities.
The disaster comes as weather authorities continue to warn of unstable conditions across southwestern Libya. The National Center of Meteorology has forecast further rainfall of varying intensity in several southern regions, cautioning that additional flash floods and overflowing valleys remain possible.
In response to the weather emergency, the Supreme Emergency Committee at Libya’s Ministry of Health announced an increased state of readiness across hospitals and medical facilities. Health authorities said emergency teams are prepared to respond to any developments resulting from the ongoing storms and flooding.
Flooding remains a recurring challenge in several parts of southern Libya, particularly during periods of heavy seasonal rainfall. Limited infrastructure and the vulnerability of low-lying residential areas often increase the risk of displacement and property damage when severe weather strikes.
Authorities and humanitarian organizations continue monitoring conditions in Tehala as relief operations remain underway and weather forecasts indicate the possibility of further rainfall in the coming days.
